Over the years, both the Technical department and sales consultants at RIAS have handled numerous advanced, and very interesting, assignments.
We are happy to demonstrate some of these solutions to give an idea of the scope we can offer in terms of advisory services.
The North Sea Museum - a complex solution
When the North Sea Museum in Hirtshals suffered a fire in 2003, one of the subsequent tasks was restoring the huge Oceanarium's windows. RIAS was involved in this major project.
Three of the eleven acrylic panes in the Oceanarium were so damaged that they had to be replaced. The remainder were cleaned and renovated.
The large size of one of the panes (4.8 x 6.1 m and 270 mm thick) was a particular challenge. Eight of the existing panes could be reused, and RIAS was involved in the cleaning and polishing of the acrylic.
Cast acrylic is the obvious material for such large sizes, particularly for aquarium windows, as the pressure from the water is huge. The benefits of acrylic include the fact that it is as clear as glass, weighs very little despite the large dimensions, is easy to clean and maintain and provides a very high degree of unbreakability, as demonstrated by the fire in Hirtshals: Only three of the eleven panes had to be replaced due to damage, which is impressive when you consider the intense temperatures they were exposed to.
